Lexden Cup Round 3

Friday 11th saw Mersea A Team (Max, Ellis, Lara & Madison) complete another successful round in the Lexden Cup Inter Schools junior squash competition taking victories in all their 4 matches. The long awaited match against Tiptree, whom Mersea came runners up to last year was an electric event. Team members from both Mersea A & B teams were rooting for each other as Mersea A took to the courts. Max started strongly against the undefeated Morgan from Tiptree, with everyone willing him on, Max comfortably defeated him to a chorus of cheers 9-6. The belief in Mersea’s team was now strong and Ellis took his place on court to defeat Tiptree player 9-5, both boys having showed some impressive moves on court. Lara followed this up with a 9-0 dominating game against Tiptree’s best girl to give Mersea enough points to have won the match against Tiptree. Madison claimed 6 points towards our total but was pipped at the post by Tiptree girl 2, however Madison banked a creditable 32 points over the course of Friday for the team.

This left Mersea A having won all of their matches over the three rounds of the Lexden Cup and Tiptree with wins in all others except against Mersea A. However, due to the number of points that Tiptree won all their other matches by, it left them 5 points clear of Mersea in the final table with 443 points. Mersea A took Runner Up place with 338 points, but all of the team felt proud to have won all of their matches and deafeated the winning team, a moral victory.

Mersea A team have grown in strength over the three rounds, their play has improved with every game played and special mention to Ellis, Max, and Lara who won every match last Friday in domineering style.

Mersea B team ( Tom, Jake, Ruby & Charlotte) continued a strong showing at the Lexden Cup. Tom deserves a special mention after playing as Mersea B’s boy 1, so taking on all of the other team’s best boys. Tom won every match on Friday never letting anyone close enough to challenge him. Tom’s game has improved drastically during the three rounds. Jake (who stepped in for an ill Joe), Ruby and Charlotte all looked far more confident on court and were playing a much better game than in the first round, in total they racked up 289 points to finish in 4th place behind Chappel on 312.

I would like to make a special mention to Mr Humphreys, Mrs Cook, Mrs Allen and Mrs Struth who all helped with the transport to the three competitions. Thank you to Paul Allen at Lexden Squash and Racketball Club, who runs and organised the chaos that ensued with 11 teams of 4 children all with rackets and balls in hand. Without all of these people, events like these would not be possible. And some of these children could be squash stars of the future.

All of Mersea’s children acquitted themselves with good manners and sportsmanship at these rounds, opening the court doors for others before themselves, thanking the referees for marking their matches and shaking hands with their opponents as they left each court, and most importantly supporting the other members of their teams regardless of the result as they stepped off court. They were all a pleasure to travel with.
