MICA Centre – 27th May 2015

Fourteen children took part in the second tournament held at the MICA Centre, West Mersea.

The day was run under a different format to last time, the children were ranked according to ability and then a handicap score applied to each player. They were then split by a random draw into two groups of seven players to each contest a trophy for a win in their group. This meant that there were varying degrees of players in the same group, the handicap system meant that the more novice players had a chance of taking out strong players, while making the stronger players have to earn a game by focusing on every point and not giving away points with silly mistakes.

Group 1 was taken forcefully by Olivia, 2nd place to Isaac and 3rd place to Joe, who served an exceptional game. Olivia had the second highest handicap of the day starting every game on -5 points, she won every game taking the maximum available points. The only person to get near her was Isaac who still ended up 3 points away. Olivia read every opponent well, if she felt the pressure from her handicap, she certainly did not show it.

Group 2 was a win for Charlie again taking all his matches in style for a maximum score. 2nd place was Eddie who won every other game except against Charlie, 3rd place went to Billy, who started the competition with the highest handicap of -6 and the most pressure, Billy did well to end in 3rd.

At the end of the event, shortly before the prize giving, Olivia and Charlie, the winners of each group played a face-off game with everyone watching. It was started on a 0-0 score, best of two games to 11 points. This game brought with it an electrifying atmosphere from the crowd and was convincingly won by Olivia.

Andrew Tilsley very kindly refereed and scored court 1 for the day and was very impressed with the quality of play. Sadie Roffe kindly helped with crowd control and kept us provided with coffee. Thank you to both of them as without their help, this event would be impossible.
