WWII Plaque Unveiling Assembly

On Friday the 23rd February, 2018 children from Mersea Island School (Year 5 and Year 6) and visitors came to the unveiling of the memorial plaque. The plaque showed the names of all

the people from Mersea Island Primary School who died in WWII. The brave soldiers were:

Alfred Butler

Ronald Chatters

Herbet Cudmore

Douglas Cutts

Eric Head

 George Hillaby

Owen Hewes

George Stoker

George Sampson

All these brave men helped Britain win the war by giving up their lives, this is why every one of them is named on the plaque. Elisha Gale (Alfred Butler’s great granddaughter) felt very emotional like many of us there. The plaque will remain in Mersea Island Primary School to remind students of the soldiers, many of who were not much older than they are now. We were honoured to be joined by the Mayor of Mersea who read us a famous poem about the war.
