The final round of the Lexden Cup series took place on Friday 14th December. Mersea B team had their final pool match against an inform Stanway A side, but Mersea were stronger and all four players: Luca, Hugh, Alice and a new player for the series Emma (returning after injury) confidently took a win each and a team win of 60-22 to finish second in the pool group just 6 points behind the leaders.

Mersea A team: George, Daniel, India and Lucy had a date with an old adversary Tiptree. George stepped up to take a dominating 15-0 win, followed swiftly by Daniel with a 15-3 win. This gave the girls a strong lead as they stepped onto the court. India had a tough job playing against unbeaten Tiptree girl one and managed to steal a point towards the team total. This gave Lucy a 13 point cushion stepping onto court with only three points needed to beat Tiptree, although coach may have neglected to tell Lucy this and she battled for a 15-14 finish, dropping her only point of the series she played for Mersea in a great match. Mersea taking the win against Tiptree 45-33.

This meant the final league tables were:

Mersea A         274
Mersea B         268
Tiptree              228
Stanway A        179
Stanway B        148
Milldene              51

Mersea A and Mersea B played off for 1st and 2nd places in the final. George took a commanding lead over Luca 15-1 with Hugh then turning it around for Mersea B beating Daniel 15-9. With the girls up next, Alice and India edged up the points fairly equally and with a last flourish India took charge for a 15-11 win. Lucy last up on court this time with a 12 point advantage from her team mates meant she only needed 4 points for her team to win but fought hard for a win of 15-3 over friend Emma to see Mersea A take the 2018 Lexden Cup trophy with a win of 54-30 against Mersea B in Runner-up spot.

Well done to George and Hugh who both remained unbeaten throughout the three round series and to Lucy who dropped only one point throughout the series. Well done to Matilda who could not be with us in the final, but her points in earlier rounds helped Mersea to their success.

Once again, Mersea School's junior squash team had impeccable manners on and off court. They were honest and sporting towards others. They are all a pleasure to take to events. This win sees Mersea qualified for the Essex School Games, taking place in January at the Garrison against the winners and runners up from the Roman Cup.

Well done Team EFS Mersea. Looking particularly dapper this year in their newly sponsored team kit.
