Essex County Closed junior squash runner-up

Lucy (year 6) was the only person from Mersea School to achieve trophy status at the Essex County Closed event on the weekend of 28th & 29th September. Lucy took a well-deserved runner-up spot in the girls under 11 section winning both matches 3-0 in the group stages and then only just missing out by the skin of her teeth in the final with a 3-2 battle of wills. Lucy’s game has improved immensely in the last year and this result justified her hard work.

Other notable results went to Phoebe (year 5) who claimed third place in the GU11 just behind Lucy and who still has another year left in this age group. Hugh (year 6) in boys U11 finished in third place only dropping one match the whole tournament.

There were good performances also over the duration of the weekend from: Chase Castle-Prop in BU11 who finished in 11th at his first major tournament.

The one sadness was that Grace (year 3), recent star of Mersea Life due to the sheer number of great performances at GU9 level, was unable to compete in her county championship due to a fall the week before at school that left her with a broken wrist (luckily not her playing hand), although I have my suspicions that she would be equally good with her left hand too! Grace has also had to withdraw from a bronze tournament on 5th/6th October and the East regional closed, which I am sure she would have excelled in. Luckily though at only 7yo she still has a great deal of time to claim these titles.
