Mersea once again showed their strength in junior squash at the 2018 annual Essex County Closed event held 15/16 September 2018. This tournament runs over two days and is open only to Essex residents, the event is used by Essex Junior squash as a selection process for county team selection events later in the squash season.

Mersea had six current pupils competing and nine past pupils in all bagging 6 of the trophies on offer at the event. Four of the six current pupils were trying out a squash tournament for the first time and did not disappoint.

Grace who only turned seven the day before the competition took home the girls Under 9 category winner trophy. Grace had to play boys twice her height as girl entries were low on the ground achieving more than 50 points against the boys, looking very much a player of the future.

Grace's brother George playing in the boys under 11 section won all of his four group matches dropping just one game along the way. The final saw him up against the number one seed and try as he might, taking one game, George had to settle for runner up this time.

Harrison (only year 4) got some amazing points and equally played some really great rallies in a really tough group. Again, looking lik a pleasing future ahead.

Daniel at his first squash tournament gave some really close performances against really experienced players, pitched in the same box draw as Hugh who was unlucky to finish equal second on matches with two other players, however on count back of points to separate them for places ended up down the table this time.

Lucy played girls under 11, her first tournament for Essex Squash and she took on some really experienced girls. Amassing a massive 57 points in just three matches and twenty one of those against the seed one player she was very close to upsetting the draw.
