Not one, but two current students from Mersea Island School travelled to Manchester for 8th April to compete in the National Under 11 Festival, although only one of them knew about it on the trip up there!
Hugh  (Year 3) thought he was supporting his big sister Amelie (Year 5) as she had been selected to represent Essex as seed 3 on the Essex girls team, however on arrival at the venue a late withdrawal of a player on the Essex boys B team meant, so far away from home and too late in the day to organise a replacement player from Essex that Hugh, only 8 years old, had giant boots to fill by stepping into the B team third seed position, meaning that the boys B team could still compete.

Hugh played some great rallies scoring some good points against some extremely experienced players, the crowd really getting behind him giving him huge cheers when he won a point leaving him grinning from ear to ear and never giving up. Essex B team finishing in a creditable 17th position, with Essex boys A team in  a great 3rd position finish.

Amelie and her team mates, Renitha and Rebecca stormed through the group stages against Wiltshire and Northumbria winning all their matches confidently. This left them in the first, second and third position play-offs. Against Hampshire, Amelie was the only team member to win her match and sadly Warwickshire were a little too strong for them all this year. Essex girls matched the boys with a fantastic 3rd place finish against the best under 11's in the country.

Well done to both Amelie and Hugh.
