Mersea School Squash

Mersea school started a program of squash in PE classes in 2014. Each year group initially from years 3-6, and subsequently year 2-6, had a half term block of sessions once a year. From these sessions, children that showed talent attended trial sessions at the Mica Centre squash courts in the village and from there teams were selected to represent the school at the Lexden Cup held at Lexden Rackets and Fitness near Chitts Hill, Colchester.

In our first two years of competing the children achieved good runner up positions to a Tiptree Heath team that had more experience. Following our teams’ success Mersea School funded more squash equipment, 4 x Squash nets, 16 rackets and numerous balls allowing for even more targeted practice in PE sessions. This led to our first year 5/6 tournament win in December 2016, which was great, but we also took runner up position with our B team. Mersea then went on to be Lexden Cup Champions in 2017, 2018 and in 2019 the category was split up to instead of being a year 5/6 competition, a year 5 and a separate year 6 competition, of which we won both sections.
In 2017 year 3/4 tournaments were added at Easter with the growing number of children playing. Mersea took the win in 2017, 2018 and 2019 before Covid stopped play in 2020.
From the Lexden Cup, the top two teams are eligible to compete at the Essex School Games where they compete against all the best children from other tournaments held around Essex. Mersea School in 2019 won the year 6 section and were runner up in year 5. In 2020 we went one better taking both sections home as top year 5 and year 6 squash teams in Essex.
